Right to Jury Trial

The importance of the right to trial by jury cannot be underestimated. It is the one thing that makes our country so special.  Where else can a group of common working people tell the rich and powerful that their conduct is unacceptable and then do something to hold them responsible for their misguided ways?  Where else can a group of twelve of your neighbors and peers listen to the evidence from both sides and settle disputes without the necessity for violence or bloodshed.

Too often I hear nay sayers complaining in obtuse terms about someone else’s “frivolous claim” or “junk lawsuit”.  I respectfully disagree with their assessment.  Cases are screened and evaluated many times. First by the claimant, then his attorney, then the opposing side and its attorney, then the judge and finally the jury. If the case truly lacks merit, the case will be disposed of.  Mostly though,  cases involve  real issues with real consequences.  In the end, a jury or judge decides who is right and who wrong. What is wrong with that?

So be proud of our legal system and your right to trial by jury. Stand up for those rights.  Embrace our civil justice system and take pride in our right to a trial by jury. It's what makes our country special.
